INTRODUCTION
Furoliz 500 contain cefuroxime which belongs to a group of medicine called cephalosporin antibiotics. It is an antibiotic used in adults and children to treat infections of throat, sinus, middle ear, lungs or chest, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissues. It works by preventing bacteria from forming the bacterial protective covering (cell wall). This causes the cell walls to rupture resulting in the death of the bacteria.
The common side effects are fungal infections (such as Candida), headache, dizziness, diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, increase in a type of white blood cell, increase in liver enzymes. Always take Furoliz 500 exactly as your doctor has told you. This medicine must be taken after food. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. This medicine is strictly not recommended for children aged under 3 months. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

HOW Furoliz 500 WORKS
Furoliz 500 works by preventing bacteria from forming the bacterial protective covering (cell wall). This causes the cell walls to rupture resulting in the death of the bacteria.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Always take Furoliz 500 exactly as your doctor has told you. This medicine must be taken after food. Try to take this medicine at the same time each day. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS OF Furoliz 500
SERIOUS
- Severe allergic reactions (including raised and itchy rash, swelling, sometimes of the face or mouth causing difficulty in breathing)
- Skin rash, which may blister and look like small target (central dark spot surrounded by a paler area, with a dark ring around the edge)
- Widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)
- Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (fever, chills, muscle pain)
COMMON
- Fungal infections (such as candida)
- Headache, dizziness
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Increase in a type of white blood cell (eosinophilia)
- Increase in liver enzymes
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Headache:
Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.
Dizziness:
Get up and move around to feel awake, take small naps to edge off the sleepiness. Give your eyes a break to avoid fatigue and eat a healthy food to boost energy.
Diarrhoea:
Drink lot of fluids, such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicines without consulting to a doctor.
Nausea:
Try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.
Stomach pain:
Keep try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly and smaller and frequent meals. Applying a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machine while taking this medicine since it may cause dizziness and less alertness.
ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with Furoliz 500.
KIDNEY
Furoliz 500 should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
Furoliz 500 should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Do not take Furoliz 500 if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to cefuroxime or any other ingredients in this medicine.
OTHERS
Tell your doctor if you have or had a condition such as,
- Fungal infections (such as candida)
- Severe diarrhoea (pseudomembranous colitis)
INTERACTIONS
Talk to your doctor if you are taking,
- Medicine used to reduce the amount of acid in your stomach (e.g. antacids used to treat heartburn)
- Probenecid (used to treat gout)
- Oral anticoagulants
- Contraceptive pills
